Preschool Curriculum Overview
At The Mount Kelly Hong Kong Preschool we follow the National Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework and aim to provide high quality education that supports the development of well-rounded individuals who have a thirst for learning.
We are a non-selective school and our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all children, whatever their ability. We aim to help our children to achieve well, to become confident, mature and caring, and to take their love of learning on throughout their lives.
Structure of the Preschool
Nursery K1 (aged 3 – 4 years old). The children enter the term after their third birthday. The children have the option to attend morning or afternoon sessions. Teachers work closely with the Reception teachers to ensure children make their transition smoothly at the end of the academic year.
Reception K2 The children in Reception are normally between 4 and 5 years old. Children spend 1 year in the Reception class for mornings or afternoons. The teachers work to ensure the pupils have access to a broad and balanced curriculum while taking into consideration children’s individual interests and needs.
Parents wishing to enrol their child for a full day will be noted and we will endeavour to accommodate this prior to opening.
Class sizes are kept to a maximum of 20 children per class. All classes have the support of a teaching assistant.
The seven areas of learning are planned for by teachers.
The school has a strong family atmosphere which helps the children to feel safe and secure. They therefore happily accept specialist teaching and usually join in confidently with whole-class activities.
Structure of the week
Pupils at Mount Kelly attend for three hours per day, five days per week. The morning session is 9.00 – 12.00 and the afternoon session is 13.00 – 16.00.
All children are electronically registered in the Preschool.
We urge parents to be punctual so that children receive their full entitlement and other children are not disturbed by latecomers.
At our Preschool we follow the national EYFS Framework.
The values which underpin all provision are grouped into four guiding principles which form the context for the seven areas of learning. These are carefully planned for by teachers and form our EYFS curriculum.
At the Preschool, we follow the principles of the EYFS while extending and enriching the curriculum to best suit our children. The pupils at Mount Kelly benefit enormously from the extensive curriculum and ‘little and often’ approach to enjoying literacy and numeracy that is followed in this important year group. Children will also enjoy all the things encompassed in the curriculum such as music, dance, ICT and Chinese that are included in the weekly timetable.
